My parents traveled from Oregon to New Zealand to visit us during the tail-end of our year long trip around the world, and during our stay at The Arrow on day 349, we four enjoyed walks down the lupine paths along The Arrow River on our way to small-town-NZ main street and a December dinner on the outdoor patio.

Tim and Colette, our hosts at The Arrow, greeted us with a kind welcome drink and stories of the international Olympic teams that switch hemispheres to stay at The Arrow and practice their snow sports on the nearby slopes. All sort find a cozy home base here at this private hotel. They attended to details and made the space a peaceful retreat. And they have experience rolling with the punches—after the infamous earthquakes, Colette managed to amass a stockpile of a year’s worth of Marmite, just in case!

The landscape architect in me adored the materials and forms juxtaposed with the wild surrounding landscape.

Our Favorite Memory: Walking through the Lupine meadow toward fish and chips and greenstone in Arrowtown.

Wifi: Available.
Breakfast: Provided through an ingeniously designed double-doored pass-through chamber, allowing the hosts to silently leave our breakfast in the morning while we enjoyed a leisurely sleep-in and found our fresh food at waking.
Our Favorite Amenities: The soaking tub, of course!
Setting: A quiet retreat nestled at a manageable walk-through-the-woods distance from Arrowtown.

This feature is part of our Where to Stay Around the World series featuring quintessential and offbeat experiences, one-of-a-kind accommodations and beautiful B&Bs, traditional hotels and resorts, and a few surprises in between. As always, all opinions, photos, and stories are our own; many thanks to our kind hosts and partners along the way.
