Where to Stay in Mossel Bay: African Oceans Five Star Bed and Breakfast

African Oceans: Five Star Excellence and Comfort on the Indian Ocean.

African Ocean wears a colorful welcome sign on the front door: a plaque designating it as one of the official “South Africa 2010 Fifa World Cup Official Accommodations.” The five star bed and breakfast sits just above the shoreline, overlooking the great expanse of Mossel Bay. Courteous, helpful staff make settling in easy, and the luxurious cocoon of comfort makes leaving hard.

Fresh red roses in the room greet guests on arrival; luggage and worries fall deep into the plush carpet at the foot of the bed, not to move again until departure.

A helpful pre-marked map of recommended restaurants in Mossel Bay tempts guests to go out on the town while a well-stocked mini bar (with the most down-to-earth prices known to travelers) and a handy list of local delivery places makes holing up in style the easiest choice.

When we checked in, pre-sunset sea breezes blew in over the deck, through the open doors, and into our beautiful suite. Another of South Africa’s fine soaking tubs (what’s not to love about this tradition?) and a pair of plush robes paved the way for unwinding after another leg of our road trip.

Breakfast service includes buffet selections of fresh fruit salads, yogurts, granola and fruit juices, and a full menu of hot dishes from the kitchen tempts with choices including veggie or mince meat omelets, French toast and bacon with a side of honey, and more. And don’t be surprised when they bring out a special treat, say, pineapple puree and fluffy cream with a sprig of mint? A satisfying way to begin the say on the beautiful southern coast.

Our Favorite Memory: Dining in, chilling out, sending photos uploads and email hellos and new blog posts over the fastest, most reliable wifi we’d experienced in South Africa, and waking to the sunrise coloring the sea.

Wifi: Unlimited, fast, connected easily from the room. Best internet experience in the country.
Breakfast: Delicious, without a doubt. Self-serve fruit salad, granola, yogurt, juice; service pineapple puree and cream, and menu options including mince meat, French toast and bacon (with honey rather than maple syrup)
Our Favorite Amenities: Not to overstate the fact, but the zipping and unlimited wifi stole the show! The plush, fuzzy carpet, generous soaking bath, and cable movie channels didn’t hurt, either.
Setting: Just a few minutes from the mall in Mossel Bay in a quiet, residential neighborhood, overlooking the beautiful waters of the Indian Ocean.
