Where to Stay in Plettenberg Bay: Trogon House and Forest Spa

Trogon House and Forest Spa: A paradise for grown-ups visiting Animal Alley.
See other featured accommodations in our Where to Stay in South Africa directory.

A few minutes’ drive from Plettenberg Bay, Trogon House and Forest Spa sits on a hidden tract of land in The Crags, just beyond Monkeyland and Birds of Eden. The journey down 4×4-style tracks may be made by smaller cars as well, and on the way to the entry you’ll catch a glimpse of the Monkeyland creatures welcoming guests to the forest.

To enter the quiet complex, elevated boardwalks offer an easy path through the tree canopy. Thatched-roof suites and multi-room complexes are both available, great for a couple or a larger group of friends.

Shannon, the manager, opened the beautiful B&B in mid-2012, throwing her decade of hospitality experience industry into every fine detail of this new venture: scrumptious morning breakfast served in the warmly decorated dining room, a bar for poolside drinks or a sip of something warming before a good nights’ sleep, perfectly appointed suites with plush bedding and a private deck for relaxing to the sounds of the wilderness.

The Forest Spa sits secluded in the woods: a jacuzzi fed by local water, a glass-windowed sauna perched out into the green surrounds, plenty of space couples massages or solo treatments, and of course champagne and tapas bites to keep energy up! The Spa is available for bookings in tandem with accommodations or separately for a day-time visit.

From the moment you close your car door and leave the outside world behind, you’ll feel blissfully secluded in the South African forest. Close enough to Plettenberg Bay to explore nearby wineries, restaurants, beaches, and wildlife attractions for the day, and cozy enough to never leave!

Our favorite memory: Sipping cold cider after a day’s drive from Jeffreys Bay, Ted happily content on the leather couch, working through his book-of-the-moment (I think it was The Olive Tree and The Lexus) while I tapped at the computer and soaked up rays of sunshine out on the pool deck. The buttery afternoon sun, rosy red pillows, and blue, blue water never looked so good surrounded by forest green.
