Somewhere Beyond the Sea

March 20, 2012

March 21st-April 6th, 2012: We’re not here.

We’re going old school: sailing away from phones and internet, crossing the Atlantic on a ship.

It’s a funny thing, leaving a continent behind.

I remember this poignant scene from a book I read once: immigrants leaving Greece for America saying tearful farewells to their families at the port. When the time came to board the ship, the voyagers carried with them a ball of string while their loved ones held tight to the other end. As the ship pulled back from the docks and made way for the open sea, the goodbye waves fluttered on land and on deck, tears fell, and little by little the ball unraveled.

At the last, they came to the end and let the string fly off in the wind…

We’ve enjoyed nearly three months in South America, and we have many more stories to tell and adventures to share from our time on the grand continent, but at the request of Ted and at the restrictions of Oceania’s 95¢/minute internet access, I’m letting go of the blog for a bit.

A few auto posts will keep things lively for the first stretch, and then radio silence while we finish our days at sea. We’ll pick back up again on the other side, when the time is right.

Thanks to each of you who read along, who send notes and leave comments and keep in touch. Really, every single one of you is so appreciated. (And if you’ve been reading quietly along, you’re appreciated, too! Please, leave a note – it would be lovely to hear from you.)

Enjoy the coming posts about adventures in Buenos Aires. We’ll have plenty more to share later on about Iguazu Falls, Rio de Janeiro, and our voyage to Cape Verde and Casablanca and the Canary Islands on the way to Barcelona.

When we reach shore in the Mediterranean, we’ll be tweeting and such about Spain, Italy, and beyond. We’ve got grand adventures waiting, somewhere beyond the sea…

All our love, B&T

P.S. For the encore performance I really wanted to share but couldn’t embed on the site due to copyright restrictions, visit the dreadfully ugly youtube site to watch this classy version.

Yes, exactly! I can only imagine how huge the ocean seemed in those days and how big of an unknown adventure he was stepping into when he boarded that ship. I’m so glad he did! : ) xoxo

Give a wave to the Kasbah for me! Watch out for the vendors that like to put a cobra around your neck so you can have your picture taken! Also the storekeepers that will keep you all day so you miss seeing much! (Did both! Still fun!) – Toni Anderson

Enjoy you two! The trip will be amazing and it’s fantastic that you are putting technology aside for a bit. I doubt you’ll regret it. I can’t wait to hear how that apartment in Buenos Aires worked for you!

I think Ted needs this 2 week break……sit back and relax and let someone else do the driving (and hiking and carrying). See you on the other side!

Which repositioning cruise are you doing? Any advice on how to identify them and how to choose? We are thinking of doing same in the fall to get there!

We are waiting to read of your Transatlantic adventures!!! I’m wondering if you were in any storms? I can imagine you will be enjoying a little more “space” than a ship provides. What a great time to “land” in Spain . . . just in time for Easter weekend!!! I imagine you will participate in the beautiful Easter celebrations/traditions of Barcelona.
