Half a Year with our little Hazelnut

September 2, 2016

Little Marion’s been out here breathing air for half a year. I wrote a post when Lucie turned six months old, and so many of the same things could be said this time around…but it’s also an entirely different experience.

Mom of two.

Me.

A jump of a different sort into a new world. Not like the original: going from half of a footloose married duo to partnered first time parent. This time, the family rhythm thing was already ticking along in the background of our life story, but the change felt a bit like adding a second jump rope to the routine.

Quick.

On your toes.

Faster.

Watch out.

Here it comes again, sooner than you think.

First week home: first solo trip with both girls out and about (Mr. Ben’s musical routine at Poa Cafe, if you care to know).

A tired mom, a sick toddler, and a wide awake baby. Two and a half weeks old.

First Easter.

Seven weeks of chunk: 94% weight, 96% height.

#marionandherhair is a real thing.

Wait. Stop. Slow down.

First Fourth of July as a family of four…just a few days after our 10th Anniversary.

At Pip’s – our family’s happy place.

Dr. Lucie assisting at Marion’s six month appointment. (Guess what the toddler may be getting for her third birthday?)

And boom.

Just like that.

I went to hold a friend’s little newborn today. She was born a few days before Marion’s half-birthday, and she felt light as a feather in my arms, all snugly and sleepy and small.

Half a year. Heaven help me.

Half a decade flew by nearly as fast. (Could this have been five years ago?)

Oregon autumn’s creeping up, and my little Hazelnut is squiggling and wiggling and squirming her way toward crawling…and probably heading off to college sometime shortly after.

And come that day, I’m told I’ll find myself staring at pictures.

Probably wistful for the sleepless nights and long cuddles and adorable giggles and first fists full of food.

Glad for the memories.

Hearing that faint beat of a busier life.

Reminiscing with an ache in my heart to jump rope again.

Thanks, Charlotte! Isn’t that hair just something else?? Finally! It took five brothers and a firstborn daughter who couldn’t handle people touching her hair…but finally I have my chance ;) I’ve put more clips and ponytail holders in Marion’s hair in six months than I have in Lucie’s entire almost-three-years.

Jane, you’re such a dear. So glad you can get little glimpses of these cuties. Let’s try to make time for an in-person catch up soon :) xx
